Rev. Dr. Libby Grammer will preach a sermon entitled, “Let Christmas Begin”

In our choir cantata this year, there was a piece named “Let Christmas Begin,” which had a line that read: “Come sing to our silence, come speak to our longing, come shine in our darkness, let Christmas begin.” Jesus comes in the midst of our silence – perhaps like three years without choirs and singing due to a worldwide pandemic. Jesus comes in the midst of our longing – perhaps like living in the midst of discord and struggle and longing for something better, something more whole. Jesus shines in the midst of our darkness – from the longest nights of the year, to the longest nights of our souls, Jesus is the midst of us this season, providing light and presence – Emmanuel, God-with-Us. Let Christmas begin again this year, with singing, with hope, with peace, with joy, with love, with light!

Today is Christmas Day in the Christian year. The season of Christmastide is a twelve-day celebration of the birth of Christ, beginning on Christmas Day and lasting until January 6. It is primarily a celebration of God’s incarnation. The liturgical color white is used, symbolic of the purity of Christ.
