Scripture includes: Isaiah 60:1-6 and Matthew 2:1-12

Rev. Dr. Libby Grammer will preach a sermon entitled, “Seek and Shine

The story of the “magi from the East” (note: there aren’t a literal “three kings” in the scriptures) reminds us of some important insights about faith: namely, that we are called to seek Christ and to help others who seek Christ (even in different ways from us) find the bright incarnation of God on earth. Even as far back as the prophet Isaiah, the faithful are told that when we seek the light of God, we find, and when we find, we have work to do: namely, to shine that light. And when that light shines widely in us, God’s faithful children, that’s when we know the Good News of Christ is fulfilling God’s promises to reach all nations.

Today is Epiphany Sunday in the Christian year. Epiphany (January 6) celebrates the manifestation of God in Jesus Christ and the bringing of the message of Christ’s birth to the Gentiles through the arrival of the magi to meet the young Jesus. The season after the Epiphany continues this emphasis, calling attention to the words and deeds of Jesus’ earthly ministry by which his divine sonship is made manifest. The liturgical color for Epiphany Sunday is white, symbolic of the purity of Christ.
