We spend so much time trying to create the “perfect Christmas” that we often forget that the first Christmas was anything but perfect, according to modern-day standards. There was the scandal of an out-of-wedlock pregnancy, the messy birth of a baby in another city. There were intense dreams and messengers of God speaking to a man so he doesn’t break up with the mother of the Son of God. The scandal of this plan for God’s birth into the human race reminds us that this season leading to Christmas isn’t about getting things “perfect” for the big day, but is about an unexpected show of deep love by our Creator to us, God’s children. As we light the Advent Candle of Love, may we remember this and seek to show love as God showed us love.
