Rev. Libby Grammer will preach a sermon entitled “Love’s Non-Discrimination Clause”

There’s a sense when we read a familiar parable like The Good Samaritan to hear only the biblical jargon and miss the cultural implications in the story. But Jesus’ listeners didn’t miss it – in fact, the lawyer couldn’t even bring himself to admit the Samaritan was the compassionate one in so many words. But God’s kind of love comes with it a non-discrimination clause the lawyer seems to at least understand in part after hearing this parable. And that clause means something radical for his life – that not only should we emulate “one who shows mercy,” but that the compassionate one was a cultural contradiction, from a severely disliked religious group. I wonder – Who is showing mercy in this world today when we as Christians are not? Where is God showing us love’s non-discrimination and what can we learn from the “other” among us?
