Elijah was a prophet in a tough space. He found himself so forlorn, so downtrodden, so afraid, that he couldn’t imagine God would do anything more through him. I suppose we’ve all been there, struggling to see what God could possibly do through us. Perhaps in our churches we feel it, too, as membership shrinks and we struggle to find new ways to minister to our communities. But God seems to tell us through this story of Elijah that giving up isn’t what God has in mind for us. No, God will nourish and equip us for the journey ahead, and if we allow the Divine to be our Source of strength, nothing is impossible.
