Rev. Donna Hopkins Britt will be our guest preacher. Her sermon is entitled “Implosion.”

Paul’s letter to Philemon is unique in the Bible; Paul is not writing to a community but to a person, one to whom he brought the gospel and now a Christian leader. Paul is appealing to Philemon to do something contrary to social standards and to Roman law and treat someone who has wronged him as a brother What standards do we hold that push Jesus away instead of inviting him near, to change us? To what new and difficult possibilities does Jesus call us?

Rev. Donna Hopkins Britt, who has preached at FBC for Baptist Women in Ministry Month of Preaching in February 2019, grew up in Virginia and graduated from George Washington High School in Danville, James Madison University, and Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond (where she was an early recipient of the Chevis and Helen Horne Preaching Award:)). She went straight to Calvary Baptist Church in Roanoke as Associate Pastor and was ordained in 1995. About the same time, she re-connected with her college sweetheart, Brian, and they married in 1997. When the Senior Minister left Calvary in 1999, Donna became Interim Pastor and then Pastor from 2000-2014. Since 2014, she has taught child abuse prevention to children and adults through Children’s Trust, a local non-profit. Two high-schoolers and two Labrador retrievers also keep life interesting.
