God calls Samuel to be a prophet, but it wasn’t clear at first who was calling – or why the call was to a little boy in care of the older priest. God calls Samuel to speak a hard word, and though it was difficult to follow through, Samuel spoke it. This story of Samuel’s call reminds us that God calls – and we should listen. God calls us to ministry and service in sometimes the most unexpected ways. Are we ready to say, “Here I am”?

This is the season after Pentecost in the Christian year. Having celebrated the “birthday of the church” through the giving of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost, we enter the Season after Pentecost for 24 weeks, to celebrate the existence of the church and recall her mission in the world. The liturgical color for the season is green, symbolic of the church’s growth and mission. On the first Sunday of each month, we celebrate communion, and the liturgical color changes to white to recognize the holiness and majesty of Christ.

Summer Sermon Series: God is at Work-Expect the Unexpected. This Summer, we are exploring stories from the Hebrew Bible in 1 & 2 Samuel and 1 Kings. In re-reading these biblical narratives of Samuel, David, and Solomon who find themselves in God’s plan in unexpected ways, may we find our own unexpected places in God’s narrative for our lives.

Guest Preacher Rev. Steve Zimmerman will preach a sermon entitled, “A Soldier’s Prayer”

We welcome to our pulpit Rev. Steve Zimmerman Rev. Steve Zimmerman lives in Martinsville. He has been in ministry for almost 40 years serving Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia Baptist churches as either as an associate pastor or as an interim pastor. In 2010 he began a ministry group called the Barnabas Partnership. These experienced ministers provide short-term ministry support to churches. They have ministered to various size churches in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

Rev. Angela Zimmerman, his wife, is the pastor at Starling Avenue Baptist Church in Martinsville. They have two adult twin daughters. Kimberly is a high school orchestra teacher in North Carolina while her sister, Karen, is a CBF field personnel working alongside the Protestant Church in a North Africa country to migrants and refugees.

 

This Sunday is Trinity Sunday in the Christian year, when we proclaim the church’s belief in a Triune God—Father, Son, Holy Spirit. It is a day in which we praise and worship the infinitely complex and unfathomable mystery of God’s being as Holy Trinity, One in Three, Three in One. The liturgical color for Trinity Sunday is white, symbolizing God’s purity and perfection.

Preacher Rev. Caroline Taminger will preach a sermon entitled, “Dancing with the Spirit”

Pentecost originated as a Jewish festival commemorating the giving of the law to Moses on Mt. Sinai, marking the end of slavery and liberation into new hope for the Hebrew people. The Christian history in Acts of the Holy Spirit arriving at Pentecost celebrates this same kind of liberation – one that expands on God’s power in this world, as foretold by the prophet Joel: “I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy.” What powerful liberation the Spirit of God proclaims! How will we be a part of such a story today as we live out our faith as church together?

 

This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday. Pentecost, the birthday of the church, is celebrated each year the Sunday after Ascension Sunday. We celebrate the Holy Spirit (symbolized as fire in Acts 2) being given to the believers, thus giving birth to the church. The liturgical color is red, and we celebrate corporately by wearing the colors of fire: red, orange, and yellow.

 

This Sunday is Children & Youth Sunday. Today the children and youth will be leading us in worship through song, prayer, scripture, and more! Pentecost is all about the coming of the Holy Spirit to followers of Jesus; how fitting it is that the children and youth are leading us today in the celebration of the Spirit moving among the followers of Jesus! The children and youth are either from Chatham Heights Baptist Church, First Baptist Church, or the FBC Early Learning Center.

Seventh Sunday of Easter

Rev. Dr. Libby Grammer will preach a sermon entitled, “Discerning Leadership”

The church calls leadership from within, having seen the gifts of ordinary persons working extraordinarily for the Kingdom of God. While we pastors tend to get the credit for a great many things that happen in the church, the heartbeat of the congregation can be found in the rank-and-file believers who dedicate themselves to servant leadership. What does it look like for us to recognize those leaders in our own lives and in the life of the local church?

 

This Sunday is the Seventh Sunday of Easter. Easter Sunday was the beginning of the season of Eastertide in the liturgical year. Eastertide is celebrated from Easter Sunday for fifty days, until the day of Pentecost, and focuses on the meaning of Christ’s resurrection. The liturgical color is white, symbolizing light, victory, and eternal life.

 

This Sunday is Life Deacon Recognition. Today, we celebrate our Life Deacons who have faithfully served this church as a deacon for at least two terms (6 years) and have reached the age of 75.
