This side of Easter, we explore the earliest expressions of Jesus-following in scripture, and in our own faith community, we explore our own history and legacy of faith. Following the crucified and raised rabbi from Nazareth affects how communities should live, and from the first century to the twenty-first century, we have gotten it right – and wrong. Acts speaks of unity and generosity. Where do we see these in our own midst historically and now? Where can we do better?

 

This Sunday is the Second Sunday of Easter. Easter Sunday was the beginning of the season of Eastertide in the liturgical year. Eastertide is celebrated from Easter Sunday for fifty days, until the day of Pentecost, and focuses on the meaning of Christ’s resurrection. The liturgical color is white, symbolizing light, victory, and eternal life.

What is the Good News we share this Easter? Life conquering Death. Forgiveness. Hope for Eternity. All of these, we know. But in our passage from the Book of Acts, we also see that it’s an end to the divisiveness of this earth into the unity of God’s Spirit. Those first witnesses to Christ’s resurrection found themselves preaching a Gospel with no partiality so that they might live into the vision of a very different kind of Kingdom. Where is God showing us something new as God showed Peter something new? How can we spread the word that Jesus Christ is “Lord of all”?

About Maundy Thursday

The English word Maundy for this service is derived through Middle English and Old French mandé, from the Latin mandatum (also the origin of the English word “mandate”), the first word of the phrase “Mandatum novum do vobis ut diligatis invicem sicut dilexi vos” or “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another,” from John 13:31-35.

On Maundy Thursday, we commemorate Jesus’ last meal with his disciples before his crucifixion: remembering how he taught his disciples to be servants to one another through the washing of feet and remembering Jesus’ command to the disciples to love one another.

About Tenebrae

The Tenebrae, meaning “darkness” or “shadows,” dates from medieval times. In our observance, scripture, song, and silence lead us in a prolonged meditation on the events of salvation following the Last Supper through the entombment of Christ.

With each progressive step of the Passion, the candles are extinguished until only the one Christ candle remains. When it, too, is removed from sight, we ponder the apparent victory of the forces of evil at the moment of Christ’s death.

Caroline Taminger will preach a sermon entitled, “Under the Shadow of the Cross“

We welcome our own Associate Pastor for Families Caroline Taminger as our Guest Preacher this Sunday. During the month of March, Baptist Women in Ministry encourages churches to invite women to preach (or women who don’t preach regularly) for Baptist Women in Ministry Month of Preaching. We are grateful for the many gifts of Caroline Taminger and look forward to her message!

 

Today is Palm Sunday, marking the beginning of Holy Week in the Christian calendar. These are some of the most significant days of the church year. The blessing and procession of palms reenacts the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. During Holy Week, we focus intensely on Jesus’ last days, his execution, his burial, and finally, with Easter Sunday, his resurrection.
