Guest Preacher Andy Taminger will preach a sermon entitled, “Following the Star: Consoling Spirit”

We Welcome Andy Taminger to the pulpit this morning as our guest preacher. Andy Taminger is the husband of our Associate Pastor for Families Caroline Taminger. Andy is a third-year seminary student at United Lutheran Seminary in Gettysburg, PA. After completing his coursework, Andy will begin his pastoral internship with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). He is a candidate for ordination in the ministry of word and sacrament in the ELCA.

Today is the First Sunday After Christmas in the Christian year. The season of Christmastide is a twelve-day celebration of the birth of Christ, beginning on Christmas Day and lasting until January 5. It is primarily a celebration of God’s incarnation. The liturgical color white is used symbolic of the purity of Christ.

The night before Christmas offers an opportunity to worship the newborn king. In this service, we commemorate Jesus Christ’s birth. The service is a Candlelight Service in which Christmas is celebrated with beautiful music and a meditation on the meaning of Christmas. We light the Christ candle in the Advent wreath and share the light throughout the congregation.

We hope that these holy moments bring your family close to your Christian family here at FBC Martinsville in special ways. Join us in person and experience shared light together in the Sanctuary, or watch from home on your computer, tablet, smartphone – or even hook to your TV to watch with the whole family if you can’t make it in person. This service is family-friendly, with children’s time, beautiful music, and a reading of the Christmas story.

Scripture includes: Luke 2:8-20

Rev. Dr. Libby Grammer will preach a sermon entitled, “Following the Star: Shepherd’s Wonder”

God’s message of incarnation came not to the heralds of the empire, but the lowliest shepherds in the fields. What might their wonder at this message, their sharing of this message, tell us about the Christmas story today?

Today is the Fourth Sunday of Advent, the inaugural season of the Christian year. Advent is a time of spiritual preparation for the coming of Christ; thus, it is a season of both joyous and solemn expectation. The liturgical color is purple, symbolic of a spirit of preparation.

We recognize this is not always “the most wonderful time of the year” for everyone. Sometimes we need to face the reality that even in the midst of colorful lights and celebration, we also face the longest, darkest nights – and sometimes also the darkest nights of our souls. Join us for our Longest Night service on Thursday, December 21st at 6:00 p.m., a shared service with our sister church, Chatham Heights Baptist Church, held in the FBC Sanctuary.

During this service, you will be invited to name and light a candle for a loss or disappointment you are experiencing. Even if you are unable to attend this service of lament, we invite you to find a time to name the things that are most difficult this season. Remember that though it is dark now, the Light of the world is coming.
