Preacher Rev. Dr. Libby Grammer will preach a sermon entitled, ” Looking Up, Looking Out”
As we remember Jesus’s ascension to heaven, our scripture lesson in Acts reflects on the ministry of his disciples who remained, whose lives continued. Jesus has promised they would not be left alone as they continued to witness to his life, death, and resurrection. A power – a Holy Spirit – would come, and they would have the courage to reach out from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth. As we end the season of Easter, one week before Pentecost Sunday, are we standing and looking up to heaven, or are we looking around at the work we have yet to do together in Christ’s name, preparing our hearts for God’s Spirit coming anew?
Today is Ascension Sunday. This Sunday commemorates the bodily ascension of Jesus into heaven. We celebrate Jesus’ ascension on the last Sunday of Eastertide. The liturgical color is white, symbolizing light, victory, and eternal life.
