Rev. Dr. Libby Grammer will preach a sermon entitled, “The Short and the Long of It”
Mark’s Gospel is the shortest of the four stories of Jesus in the New Testament. Our passage for this Easter Sunday is from the short ending of Mark (years later, the longer ended would work to clarify some things). But what does it mean when Mark’s initial ending stops at the terror that seizes those first disciples to encounter the empty tomb? The short version: “Christ has been raised. Go tell the disciples…and they were seized with terror and amazement and did not say anything to anyone.” The long version: “What now?” May our resurrection experience be one of such awe and amazement, yet also one that keeps Easter alive well past our hushed wonder, all the way to the shouts of alleluia to all who can hear it!
Today is Easter Sunday, the joyous celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ! Easter Sunday marks the end of Holy Week, the end of the season of Lent, and is the beginning of Eastertide in the liturgical year. Eastertide is celebrated from Easter Sunday for fifty days, until the day of Pentecost, and focuses on the meaning of Christ’s resurrection. The liturgical color is white, symbolizing light, victory, and eternal life.
Giving of our Resources
Please continue to give generously to the ministries of our church in 2021, even as we cannot meet in person each week. You can give online here or mail / drop off your tithes and offerings to the church office. Your gifts help us to continue to minister through virtual church services, Bible studies, ministry to the community, and more.
Thank you for providing for the mission and ministry of First Baptist Church!
