Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost
Scriptures include: Jeremiah 29:1, 4-7
Rev. Dr. Libby Grammer will preach a sermon entitled, “Stop Waiting and Live”
Dr. Melissa Ramos once used this sermon title as a summary of our passage from the prophet Jeremiah for this Sunday. Those from Jerusalem were in exile in Babylon, away from all they ever knew, and instead of listening to the false prophets offering an immediate return to “normal,” Jeremiah, the true prophet, offers a very different word: “Stop waiting to return to how it used to be and live/thrive right where you are. On top of it, pray for those who have exiled you!” What might this passage say to us, after living through city and church decline, a pandemic, and more?
This is the season after Pentecost in the Christian year. Having celebrated the “birthday of the church” through the giving of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost, we enter the Season after Pentecost for 24 weeks, to celebrate the existence of the church and recall her mission in the world. The liturgical color for the season is green, symbolic of the church’s growth and mission.
