Rev. Dr. Libby Grammer will preach a sermon entitled, “Participants in Christ”
Participant trophies get a bad rap these days, but in the Kingdom of God, they are all that matters. The Apostle Paul tells us that it’s not our spiritual credentials that make us good Christians, but our willingness to follow Christ wherever he leads, to be participants in the work of Jesus in this world. Paul has given us such good questions for the season of Lent: How willing are we to join the work of God, even if it leads somewhere new and unfamiliar, somewhere difficult or painful? How willing are we to walk all the way to a cross, or to at the very least give up some measure of our own “cred” for the sake of Christ?
Today is the Fifth Sunday in Lent. Lent is the season in which we anticipate Jesus’ final trip to Jerusalem and the self-giving nature of love shown in his passion and death. The season begins with Ash Wednesday and extends for forty days through Saturday of Holy Week. Sundays are excluded from Lent, being regarded as feast days in the midst of the forty-day fast. Lent is a strongly penitential season. The liturgical color is purple, used to symbolize penance, preparation, sacrifice.
