Scripture includes: Psalm 119:9-16 and John 12:20-33

In our Gospel lesson, Philip and the other disciples find out just what a powerful sacrifice Jesus is willing to make. Jesus says “the hour has come” and the “seed of grain must die before it can bear fruit.” Our hour is nearing too. Lent is coming to an end soon. We realize that sometimes things must die away before rebirth can happen. Are we ready on our Lenten journey to make a commitment to sacrificial living? If not, what’s holding us back?

This Sunday is the Fifth Sunday in Lent. Lent is the season in which we anticipate Jesus’ final trip to Jerusalem and the self-giving nature of love shown in his passion and death. The season begins with Ash Wednesday and extends for forty days through Saturday of Holy Week. Sundays are excluded from Lent, being regarded as feast days in the midst of the forty-day fast. Lent is a strongly penitential season. The liturgical color is purple, used to symbolize penance, preparation, sacrifice.

During the season of Lent, in a series called, “Journey to the Cross: Sacrifice in Real Life” we will explore the theme of sacrifice and how we see it lived out in the journey to the cross in scripture and our own journey to the cross as we experience this season of penitence together.

Giving of our Resources

Please continue to give generously to the ministries of our church in 2024, whether in-person or online here – or mail / drop off your tithes and offerings to the church office. Your gifts help us to continue to minister through in-person and virtual church services, Bible studies, ministry to the community, and more.

Thank you for providing for the mission and ministry of First Baptist Church!
