Rev. Dr. Libby Grammer will preach a sermon entitled, “God Questions: Floods, Rainbows, and Covenants

How can an ancient flood story speak to our journey with Jesus during this Lenten season? How does God’s judgement and God’s mercy flow into our imperfect and sinful human lives? How does our relationship to God and creation matter in new ways when we read this story? What does it mean that the chaos of water and the chaos of sin floods and destroys, but God, unlike the gods of so many other ancient flood stories chooses not to give in to anger any longer but instead makes a new covenant relationship to humans and all creation? What hope do we have when we see rainbows and when we know of Christ’s sacrifice on our behalf?

Today is the First Sunday in Lent. Lent is the season in which we anticipate Jesus’ final trip to Jerusalem and the self-giving nature of love shown in his passion and  death. The season begins with Ash Wednesday and extends for forty days through Saturday of Holy Week. Sundays are excluded from Lent, being regarded as feast days in the midst of the forty-day fast. Lent is a strongly penitential season. The liturgical color is purple, used to symbolize penance, preparation, sacrifice.

Giving of our Resources

Please continue to give generously to the ministries of our church in 2021, even as we cannot meet in person each week. You can give online here or mail / drop off your tithes and offerings to the church office. Your gifts help us to continue to minister through virtual church services, Bible studies, ministry to the community, and more.

Thank you for providing for the mission and ministry of First Baptist Church!
