Preacher Rev. Dr. Libby Grammer will preach a sermon entitled, “A Liberating Spirit”
Pentecost originated as a Jewish festival commemorating the giving of the law to Moses on Mt. Sinai, marking the end of slavery and liberation into new hope for the Hebrew people. The Christian history in Acts of the Holy Spirit arriving at Pentecost celebrates this same kind of liberation – one that expands on God’s power in this world, as foretold by the prophet Joel: “I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy.” What powerful liberation the Spirit of God proclaims! How will we be a part of such a story today as we live out our faith as church together?
Today is Pentecost Sunday. Pentecost, the birthday of the church, is celebrated each year the Sunday after Ascension Sunday. We celebrate the Holy Spirit (symbolized as fire in Acts 2) being given to the believers, thus giving birth to the church. The liturgical color is red, and we celebrate corporately by wearing the colors of fire: red, orange, and yellow.
Giving of our Resources
Please continue to give generously to the ministries of our church in 2023, whether in-person or online here – or mail / drop off your tithes and offerings to the church office. Your gifts help us to continue to minister through in-person and virtual church services, Bible studies, ministry to the community, and more.
Thank you for providing for the mission and ministry of First Baptist Church!
