Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost
Scriptures include: Amos 6:1a, 4-7 and Luke 16:19-31
Rev. Dr. Libby Grammer will preach a sermon entitled, “Don’t Wait”
The rich man and Lazarus is a familiar parable from Jesus, a story meant to teach us something about ourselves and help us become the people Christ would have us become. With contrasts and reversals, with ultimate questions of how we ought to live as Kingdom participants now, the story ultimately is telling its original hearers, and us today: Don’t wait. The time is now. As it has been said, “redemption delayed is redemption denied.” The Gospel is Good News to the Poor, and we who have such abundance have been asked to live into that truth.
This is the season after Pentecost in the Christian year. Having celebrated the “birthday of the church” through the giving of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost, we enter the Season after Pentecost for 24 weeks, to celebrate the existence of the church and recall her mission in the world. The liturgical color for the season is green, symbolic of the church’s growth and mission.
