Rev. Libby Grammer will preach the second sermon in a three-part series entitled “By Faith.”

This week’s sermon is “By Faith, A Continued Trust”

Like any good story, our faith stories begin somewhere, move through a journey, and find resolution. For the three Sundays in August, we will journey together through the concept of faith – where it begins, how it can stay constant, and how it leads us to mystery we can embrace with our obedience to a call from God.

In a continuation of our passage in Hebrews this week, we see how by faith, so many of our Hebrew ancestors clung tightly to a trust in God even when it required deep perseverance in the face of danger and fear. In a litany of stories form the Hebrew Bible, the author of Hebrews reminds the early Christians what it means to trust God for the long haul – centuries, even. Our faith provides us a foundation on which we build a community because it is by faith that we can persevere through all that this world will put upon us. And of all of these examples, it is Jesus who reminds us in the most perfect way that despite the brokenness of this world, we can, by faith, triumph over the weight of sin, running with strength the race of life together as a cloud of witnesses to Christ overcoming death and teaching us how to be faithful.
