Sixth Sunday after Epiphany
Scriptures include: Psalm 119:1-8 and Deuteronomy 30:15-20
Visiting Preacher Rev. Brian Harrington from Starling Avenue Baptist Church will preach a sermon entitled “Serving Other Gods?”
The writer of Deuteronomy tells us that God has set before us the possibility of life and prosperity or death and adversity, and to choose life we simply need to walk in the way of God. Simply? Of course, any of us who have more than a few years of life experience know that following in the way of God is no simple matter. We all have so many competing interests (gods?) in our lives that steal our attention away from what is most important, following God into the ways of justice and peace. Perhaps, if we continue to reorient ourselves to what matters most, then we can live into who God created and called us to be and experience for ourselves and our world the fullness of life that Jesus promised to us.
Rev. Brian Harrington and his wife Rev. Ashley Gill Harrington are the Co-Pastors of our sister church in Martinsville, Starling Avenue Baptist Church. Brian and Ashley began their ministry at SABC in April 2016. Brian grew up in North Carolina where he attended Wake Forest University (Winston-Salem, North Carolina) and Duke Divinity School (Durham, North Carolina). He is currently completing work on a Doctor of Ministry degree from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. He has served and supported churches in North Carolina and Florida as well as spent nearly a year serving in West Asia. Brian and Ashley have a three year-old daughter, Zoë, and a rescue dog named Gracie. He enjoys watching and attending sporting events, seeing plays and musicals, and traveling.
