Rev. Libby Grammer will preach a sermon entitled “Focused Service”
Mary and Martha, often pitted against one another as opposites, actually serve to teach us much more about what service and hospitality should be, rather than that we ought to live a contemplative life and not a life of service at all. Jesus tells Martha, the person who is showing him hospitality, not that what she is doing is bad, but that her anxiety over the details of the work is distracting her from the focus of her work: his love and teaching. Church without Martha would not exist, but church is made better when we are all are able to find Mary’s focus on Jesus in the midst of our work. Matthew Skinner says, “To be genuine, acts of discipleship—whether contemplative, active, or anything else—need to maintain such a focus.”
