Rev. Dr. Libby Grammer will preach a sermon entitled, “A Great…Shrub?”
Jesus is always giving us interesting parables to describe what God’s Kingdom come to earth is really like. This week’s lesson is one we’ve often heard, but usually because of the size of the mustard seed (they’re really small) growing a large plant where birds can nest. But mustard shrubs are closer to weeds than say, wheat. Maybe he means the Kingdom of Heaven is a little unwieldy, a little invasive and unpredictable…something that messes with our sense of order and brings a little holy chaos.
And then he tells us a parable about a little bit yeast leavening enough wheat flour to feed 100 people (that’s how much three measures is) – maybe he’s telling us the Kingdom of Heaven is a hidden and unexpected thing, something that though unseen in many ways is powerful, despite its hiddenness.
As often as we think we have this Kingdom figured out, I wonder if hearing Jesus’s own words reminds us that we can’t contain it with our own plans and ideas. What can we learn about our own ministry within God’s Kingdom from these parables?
