While we are in the wilderness of Lent, we need this story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well. We need to see the irony of Jesus’s own thirst and the water he then gives to all, even the seeming outsider, the marginalized, the person with a past. We need to remember to offer water to the stranger who may be Jesus (Matt 25:35-45), so that we may better understand and receive the water Jesus offers us.
