Twenty-Third Sunday After Pentecost

When Paul wrote to the church in Thessalonica, he was addressing a congregation who faced great struggle because there were those in the community (a fully sharing and equal community most of us cannot fathom in our culture) who were choosing not to contribute to the community. They were coming to church in hopes of being fed (how often have we heard that?) but not intending to feed others by sharing of their gifts in service to God and to their faith community. Being the church means doing, not just saying. And though sometimes it takes some sacrifice of time and energy, Paul reminds the Thessalonians and us: “Brothers and sisters, do not be weary in doing what is right.”
