Rev. Dr. Libby Grammer will preach a sermon entitled “We All Need a Little Grace”

As we recognize Reformation Sunday on the last Sunday of October, the Latin phrase “ecclesia semper reformanda,” or “the church always reforming,” comes to mind. We are not a static church – never have been. Reform is part of our spiritual DNA, and it’s important to remember that once a year when we commemorate the Protestant Reformation. Thinking about our Gospel text, I believe that an always-reforming church should be one that offers abundant grace to all, not just those who seem to have it together (but somehow still get it wrong), like the religious folk in Luke’s parable for this Sunday – but also for those who may have hit rock bottom, like our tax collector in this parable. If we are to be a church always keeping up with God and God’s good work in this world, then we also have to keep up with God’s abundant, and life-changing grace, and stop leaning on our own strengths to get by in our faith journey. Not everyone in the pew is going to be on the same or similar journey to our own. How can we be the kind of people who don’t compare, don’t judge, and do offer God’s deep grace to all who enter our midst?
