Scripture includes: John 4:5-42

Rev. Dr. Libby Grammer will preach a sermon entitled, “Conversations with Jesus, Part 2

In the longest recorded conversation with Jesus in the scriptures, a most unlikely disciple emerges – a Samaritan woman. And she emerges at an interesting place – a well – a historical place of betrothal. And while many prior readings of this text vilify her because of her marital status, interestingly, Jesus does not. In fact, he never calls her sinful, offers her true water, and with that encounter, she becomes a proclaimer of the Messiah. Perhaps “call stories” don’t always look the way we think they will…

Today is the Third Sunday in Lent. Lent is the season in which we anticipate Jesus’ final trip to Jerusalem and the self-giving nature of love shown in his passion and  death. The season begins with Ash Wednesday and extends for forty days through Saturday of Holy Week. Sundays are excluded from Lent, being regarded as feast days in the midst of the forty-day fast. Lent is a strongly penitential season. The liturgical color is purple, used to symbolize penance, preparation, sacrifice.
