Rev. Dr. Libby Grammer will preach a sermon entitled, “Expectant Joy”

Sitting in the midst of chaos and confusion like we have in 2020, the Advent Sunday of Joy feels far off emotionally. This year, we’ve mostly experienced disappointments and canceled plans. We have despaired at the power of illness and death. We have been isolated and afraid. Where is the joy this year? Mary tells us in her song that joy certainly isn’t found in the powerful and mighty here on earth, whose inequalities permeate our ethics. No, joy is found in our Savior, the same God who liberated Israel from Egypt now gestates in Mary’s womb, ready to liberate the whole world. And Mary says yes to this plan, as far off as it may seem as an unwed, poor mother. May we expect joy like Mary in this season, ready to say yes to God’s plan in our lives, pregnant with possibility and new life.

Each Sunday during Advent, some of our newer church families will read the texts and light the candles of the Advent wreath. Reading the text today is Joe and Becky Collins. Becky has been the Minister of Music at First Baptist since January 26, 2020 and Joe is Chaplain for Good News Jail and Prison Ministry in Martinsville and Henry County.

Giving of our Resources

Please continue to give generously to the ministries of our church in 2020, even as we cannot meet in person each week. You can give online here or mail / drop off your tithes and offerings to the church office. Your gifts help us to continue to minister through virtual church services, Bible studies, ministry to the community, and more.

Thank you for providing for the mission and ministry of First Baptist Church!
